Bulletin 333 - South Africa #10 - Part 3 - Old World Flycatchers and Chats, Giraffe

Continued from part 2

The last of the 20 species is the beautiful 8.5" male Mocking Cliff Chat (Thamnolaea cinnamomeiventris). He is a black and rufous bird with a white wing bar.

We all know that Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) are the tallest land mammals with their height up to 18' tall for the largest males, but their weight is immense as well. The largest males can weigh over 2 tons. There are several subspecies and this is the Southern Giraffe in South Africa.

So how does one tell a male from female giraffe? Here are a pair. The male is the taller one, but look at the horns. The female has hair on top of the horn, but the males who fight each other have the hair worn off, so the top of the horn is bare.

I have put the different bird/mammal families in single folders for easy viewing

I have photos of 31 of the 324
species of old world flycatchers

Happy birding and photography,
