Bulletin 336 - South Africa #13 - Part 2 - Kingfishers, Barbets, other non-passerines, antelope

Continued from Part 1

The 16" Gray-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus) was the only gull or tern for the trip.

Gray-headed Gull
There was only 1 parrot on the trip as well. which I thought was surprising. The 10" Brown-headed Parrot (Poicephalus cryptoxanthus) is a green parrot with brown head.

Barbets are smaller birds with stout bills. There are 3 families, Asian, African and New World Barbets.. The ones in the Americas are often difficult to find. This was my first time to see African Barbets and they are much more readily seen, often perching in the open or on the ground.

The 7" Acacia Pied Barbet (Tricholaema leucomelas) is black and white with a red forehead.

The 9.5" Crested Barbet (Trachyphonus vaillantii) is a black and yellow and red bird and an easy ID.

The 8" Black-collared Barbet (Lybius torquatus) has a red and black head.

The 7" White-eared Barbet (Stactolaema leucotis) is black with a white belly and white ear stripe.

Smaller barbets are called tinkerbirds. The 4" Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus bilineatus) is black and white with yellow on the wings and a yellow rump.

The 5" Red-fronted Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus pusillus) is black above, pale yellow below, has a gold wing patch and red forehead.

Some antelope have beautiful horns. The 600 pound Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiptymnus) is a large shaggy antelope with a white ring around his butt. Only the males have horns.

The 225 pound male Nyala (Tragelaphus angasii) is a dark shaggy brown antelope with yellow legs. Again, only the males have horns.

But the prize for the most amazing horns goes to the 570 pound male Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsicorus). Only the males have horns in this species as well.
